Recently, AARC-360 successfully completed its AICPA Peer Review and received a pass rating. While we are certainly proud of the result, what we find most meaningful is the process itself.
In today’s marketplace, organizations seeking SOC 1, SOC 2, ISO 27001, and other assurance services have more choices than ever before. Technology has accelerated many aspects of the compliance process, and automation platforms have helped organizations streamline evidence collection and monitoring. Yet one thing has not changed: assurance services ultimately depend on the quality of the professionals performing the work and the quality systems supporting them.
As SOC examinations become increasingly important to vendor risk management programs, the quality of the examination behind the report matters as much as the report itself. A SOC report is only as valuable as the rigor, independence, professional judgment, and quality control processes of the independent auditing firm that issues the report.
That is why peer review matters
The AICPA Peer Review Program is designed to provide an independent evaluation of a CPA firm’s system of quality control. It is not a marketing exercise. It is a professional examination of whether a firm’s policies, procedures, and engagement execution are designed and operating in a manner that provides reasonable assurance that professional standards are being met. Since the founding of AARC-360, we have welcomed the Peer Review every few years.
Our latest review was conducted by McKonly & Asbury, LLP, a highly respected regional CPA firm with a long-standing reputation for audit quality and professional excellence. We selected a peer reviewer with significant experience evaluating firms that perform SOC examinations and other assurance engagements and welcomed their scrutiny.
In a profession built on trust, independent review should never be viewed as an inconvenience. It should be embraced as an opportunity to validate quality, identify opportunities for improvement, and demonstrate accountability to clients and stakeholders.
The review process extended well beyond simply reviewing our policies. The peer reviewers evaluated our firm’s system of quality control and selected a random sample of assurance engagements for detailed inspection, including SOC 1, SOC 2 examinations and Attestation of Compliance engagements. The review included examination of engagement workpapers, assessment of our client acceptance and continuance procedures, evaluation of independence practices, review of quality control policies, and discussions with firm leadership and employees of the firm regarding how quality is monitored and maintained throughout the engagement lifecycle.
For firms that perform assurance engagements, these areas are foundational. Strong engagement execution begins long before fieldwork starts. It starts with accepting the right clients, maintaining independence, establishing appropriate supervision and review processes, and fostering a culture where quality is prioritized over speed.
One aspect of the peer review process that we particularly appreciate is that it reflects the profession’s commitment to self-regulation. As CPAs, we have an obligation to hold ourselves accountable to the standards that give assurance services their value. Independent peer review serves as one of the mechanisms that helps maintain public confidence in our work.
The review concluded with a Pass rating, the highest rating available under the AICPA Peer Review Program, indicating that AARC-360’s system of quality control was suitably designed and complied with to provide reasonable assurance that engagements are performed and reported on in conformity with applicable professional standards.
For our clients, the result reinforces something we believe should never be assumed: quality requires discipline, investment, oversight, and continuous improvement.
As AARC-360 continues to grow, we remain committed to welcoming independent scrutiny, strengthening our quality processes, and delivering assurance services that withstand examination by clients, regulators, auditors, and peer reviewers alike.
In assurance, trust is earned through quality. Peer Review is one of the ways we demonstrate our commitment to maintaining it. We make our independent Peer Review report readily available to clients, their auditors, and prospective clients.
